Experiential Travel in Thanlyin, Burma (Myanmar)
Posted by Wayne in Asia, Burma/Myanmar, Experiential, Travel | October 02, 2013I just returned from Burma (Myanmar) my latest experiential travel experience. The last full day of our visit, several of my colleagues and I visited a one room elementary school 20 Km from Yangon, in a forested area near Thanlyin. We planned in advance and carried books, pencils, crayons and candy, as requested by our Burmese hosts.
The little boy in the accompanying video was so focused on his study he barely acknowledged the camera (permission granted by the teacher). Burmese script is challenging to the western eye with 33 letters to indicate consonants and marks before, above and below letters indicating vowels just adds to the complexity. He missed out on the distribution of our donated books, pencils and crayons. Off camera, we made it up to him for his excellent study habit!
I plan to post several of my experiences hoping others in my network would like to think about leisure travel in a new light — experiential as opposed to passive.
